In Between Soft Horror And Bold Care
There is a space where fragmented aspects are zoomed, where the ‘insubstantial something’ gains support. A certain algorithm that generates virtually gained hierarchy and power to even implausible narratives can become actual power in reality. When virtuality has a more powerful sense of reality than it should, what can we say about the real and virtual space? In a place where beliefs are chosen over facts, fact-checking has become impotent. Is the virtual a shadow of reality or a totally new one? This is the particular juncture we have reached. Users in this space are becoming more and more accustomed to automatic reflective rejections, doubts and attacks and no matter what odd belief may be, there will always be its followers.

실체를 알 수 없는 ‘무언가’가 지지를 얻고 파편 같은 단면들이 강조되는 어떤 공간이 있다. 현실적 가능성이 전혀 없는 이야기일지라도 가상 공간에서 특정 알고리즘에 의한 위계와 권력과 같은 어떠한 세력을 얻게 되면 그것은 현실에도 영향을 미치는 실제적 힘이 된다. 가상성이 본래보다 더 강력한 현실감을 가질 때, 우리는 현실과 가상의 공간에 대해 뭐라고 말할 수 있을까? 믿음이 사실을 선택하는 곳에서 사실 확인은 무력해진다. 가상은 현실의 그림자일까 아니면 완전히 새로운 현실일까? 이것은 현재 우리가 도달한 특정한 시점이다. 이 공간 안에 있는 사용자들은 자동반사적 거부, 의심, 공격에 점점 익숙해지고 어떤 이상하고 기이한 믿음일지라도 그것의 팔로워들은 언제나 존재한다.

Despite the overflowing of ‘♥’ in the social media sphere, empathy disappears across (actual) society while we don’t know other’s world and don’t even want to know. The tendency of cognitive bias is increasingly emphasized within us as we evaluate ‘certain matters’ solely through our own feeling and intentions. Social media has increasingly penetrated into our lives and spreads those problems more immediately, leaving users who encroached by such patterns not realizing the oddity of their own behaviors. And eventually what we see is a chaotic society that has been downgraded. Behind the convenience of the recommended algorithm lies the danger of manipulation of information by a certain power that can further complicate existing senses and issues relating to identity and legality. Unsurprisingly, the victims will always be those who are outside the monolithic power structure. When informational debris becomes a virtual me and I am suggested by the online access records, is the Internet an ocean or a net?

그것의 기원으로
소셜 미디어 영역에서 ‘♥’는 넘쳐나지만, 정작 우리는 다른 사람의 세계를 알지 못하고 알고 싶지도 않아 하는 동안 (실제) 사회 전반의 공감능력은 점점 사라진다. 개인적인 감정과 의도를 통해 특정한 사안들을 평가하면서 우리 내부의 인지적 편향성은 점점 더 강조되고 있다. 소셜미디어는 우리 삶에 더 깊숙이 침투해 이러한 문제들을 더욱 즉각적으로 퍼뜨리고, 그와 같은 행동 양식에 잠식된 사용자는 특정 행동의 이상한 점조차 깨닫지 못한다. 결국 우리가 마주하는 것은 하향 평준화된 혼란스러운 사회이다. 추천된 알고리즘의 편리함 뒤에는 특정 권력에 의한 정보 조작의 위험성이 있으며, 이로 인해 정체성과 합법성에 관련한 현존하는 문제들이 더욱 복잡해질 수 있다. 놀랄 것도 없이, 그 희생자들은 언제나 획일적 권력구조의 바깥에 있는 자들일 것이다. 정보의 파편이 가상의 내가 되고 온라인 접속 기록들로 내가 제안될 때, 인터넷은 여전히 대양일까 아니면 그물일까?

‘Singularity’ means the point where machines evolve and overtake human intelligence, but perhaps what we will face in the coming days is ‘Reverse-Singularity’, i.e. by retreating some human condition, not by machines surpassing human. This will cause a huge wave of virtualization where virtuality and reality are inverted. Has technology changed humans, or have humans neglected technology? As Artificial Intelligence tries to understand and transform human ambivalence and contradictions as digits, perhaps that ambiguity is something that humans should protect in order not to get caught by a net. What kind of humanity can we retain and live with amongst the addiction-technics that make bot-like humans who swarm the fake news? In a media world where we see only the way we want to see, there only rings the clear alarm sound of ♥ 𝓯𝓪𝓴𝓮 𝓹𝓵𝓮𝓪𝓼𝓾𝓻𝓮 ♥. Can we meet somewhere over there, or in a world that we come back to after a disconnection? 👆
‘싱귤러리티’는 기계가 진화해 인간의 지능을 추월하는 지점을 의미하지만, 아마도 우리가 다가오는 시대에 직면하게 될 것은 기계가 인간을 추월하는 것이 아니라 되려 어떤 인간성이 후퇴하여 기계와 만나게 되는 ‘리버스-싱귤러리티’ 일지도 모른다. 이것은 가상과 현실이 뒤바뀌는 거대한 가상화의 물결을 일으킬 것이다. 기술이 인간을 바꿨을까, 혹은 인간이 기술을 소홀히 했을까? 인공지능은 인간의 양가성과 모순성을 0과 1의 숫자로 이해하고 변화시키려 하지만 아마 그 모순이야말로 인간이 그물에 걸리지 않기 위해 지켜야 할 무언가일지도 모른다. 가짜 뉴스를 전파하는 들끓는 봇과 같은 인간을 만드는 중독 기술들 속에서 우리는 어떤 인간성을 지키며 살아나갈 수 있을까? 우리가 보고 싶은 방식으로만 보는 미디어 세상에서는 ♥가짜 쾌락♥의 맑은 알람 소리만 울릴 뿐이다. 우리는 그곳 어딘가에서 만날 수 있을까? 아니면 그곳과 단절하고 다시 돌아온 세상에서? 👆
